Turns out Californians aren't so split on immigration: more than two-thirds of folks in the state, including nearly half of Republicans, support putting working undocumented immigrants on a path to legal status, or so says the latest poll.
According to a Public Policy Institute of California poll, 69 percent of Californians think undocumented immigrants who have lived and worked in the U.S. for two years should be given a chance to keep their jobs and eventually apply for legal status. That includes 78 percent of Democrats and 47 percent of Republicans.
Only 28 percent of Californians - 18 percent of Democrats and 50 percent of Republicans - think such immigrants should be deported.

It used to be the case that any i mmigrant who could not produce a green card visa could immediately be deported. Growing up, we always had much fear of the INS and their raids. I never hear about these deportations happening with any frequency anymore. Have the laws changed, if so, how and why?
I can't think of any other situation in which breaking the law, and remaining in violation of that law for an extended period of time, ultimately results in reward. In my personal view, giving a green card visa to someone who entered the country illegally, even one who remained part of the workforce for several years, is not good policy. You just cannot reward people who break the laws of entering the country with residency. It is just too hypocritical to make any sort of sense!
